‘Speak out on future of Craven policing’ urges MP

Skipton’s MP is urging people to take part in a consultation about the future of traffic policing in Craven.

Julian Smith this week received assurances from North Yorkshire Police that no decision had been made on the possible centralisation to Harrogate of traffic police.

He said he was concerned of the implications of any possible removal of traffic officers from Skipton and urged anyone with concerns to contact the police.

“I was pleased to hear assurances from the chief constable, Tim Madgwick, that no decisions have been made and that he was keen to listen to the views of as many people as possible,” said Mr Smith.

“I share the concerns of many residents that covering Craven’s roads from elsewhere in North Yorkshire could result in longer waits for traffic police to arrive on the scene of incidents.

“Anyone who would like to give their views on this issue should engage with the consultation process to ensure their voices are heard.”

The police are currently reviewing their specialist operations, including traffic, and are expected to make a decision around April next year.

At a meeting with Craven councillors earlier this year, Superintendent Nick Hunter, of the specialist operations unit, said the force needed to save money and become more efficient as part of the Government’s comprehensive spending review.
