Skipton Town Hall to celebrate 150th anniversary

Skipton Town Hall Skipton Town Hall

Skipton Town Hall celebrates its 150th anniversary later this month.

It was on November 21, 1862 that the hall opened in its current position on the High Street and visitors were treated to extracts of the Messiah during the afternoon and an evening concert of songs and music.

To mark the anniversary, there will be a series of events in the town hall during the week beginning November 15, culminating with a music hall-style concert on Friday, November 23.

It will feature performances by the “cream of Wharfedale and Yorkshire theatrical and musical talent”, including The Buckden Players, and will be in keeping with a quote from the Craven Pioneer of November 29, 1862 which reads: “We trust that the history of the hall, in some generations to come, may be as full of pleasant recollections and associations as the day of its formal opening”.

Skipton Civic Society and Craven District Council staff are keen to gather photographs of the inside of town hall during its history in order to create a public display and short film show.

Anyone who has copies of photographs they are willing to donate should contact Craven Museum and Gallery on 01756 706407 or email museum@cravendc.gov.uk.
