A Skipton man who crashed his car on the outskirts of Gargrave was more than twice over the legal limit, Skipton magistrates heard.

Ross Croad, 23, got himself out of his overturned car and had been given a lift back into town by a passing motorist, but was spotted by police as he walked along Canal Street, the court was told on Friday.

Police, who had been alerted to Croad’s Peugeot 206 on the side of the A65, saw he was wearing a bloodstained tracksuit.

He was taken to the police station where he was found to have 89 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Croad, who admitted drink-driving on October 16, had spent the evening with his fiancée at their home in Manbys Yard and had not intended to drive.

In mitigation, John Mewies said Croad, who made a full admission to police, had been called by the hotel in Malham where he worked to solve an urgent problem. He had been on his way to the hotel at around 11pm when he lost control of his car on a bend.

Croad, was banned from driving for 22 months and fined £300 with £85 costs and a £30 victims surcharge. If he completes a drink drivers’ rehabilitation course costing £250 by January, 2014, his ban will be reduced by a quarter.
