Volunteers are being sought to help run a new soup and social group in Skipton.

Starting in the New Year, the Seasonal Soup Group will meet at Greatwood and Horse Close Community Centre.

Aimed at carers as well as older and retired people, it will give them a chance to discuss and make favourite recipes while meeting up with others.

Debi Hawkins, from Carers Resource, said the group would offer a lot more than soup.

“It will offer a real opportunity for carers and other isolated people living in our community to come together,” she said. “Making and eating food is a real coming together activity and lots of people have favourite soup recipes they can share. It would be great if we could also produce a seasonal soup group book.”

In addition to soup making, there will be craft activities aimed at giving people a break from the norm.

“Ideally, the group will lead onto a cooking and baking club, and we’d love to hear from anyone with any skills in this area,” Debi added.

The project is a joint initiative between All Together Now, part of Carers Resource, and Yorkshire Housing. Karen McIntyre, from Yorkshire Housing, said they hoped to attract a number of volunteers. She added: “We are able to cover the cost of a food hygiene course for anyone who would be prepared to volunteer, which is a qualification that could lead to employment for people.”
