Youngsters at Skipton’s Otley Street Nursery School are doing their bit to save the planet – and, for their efforts, they have won an Eco Schools silver award.

The children have undertaken a number of environmental initiatives, drawn up by an eco committee headed by teacher Christina Birtley and parents Fiona Protheroe and Brigit Brady.

Tasks have included children acting as water and light savers, going around the building turning off lights in rooms that are not in use and checking to make sure taps are turned off.

They are also involved in composting the daily snack waste, recycling plastic, metal, glass and paper, and carrying out community litter picks.

They grow their own vegetables and enjoy feeding the birds. They also encourage their parents to recycle batteries in school and send in CDs and bottle tops for craft activities.

Mrs Birtley said: “We are very proud of this award which was gained due to the commitment shown by the children and whole staff and the support of parents.”
