A former Skipton man convicted of assaulting his wife and stepdaughter has been given a five-month curfew.

Shafiq Rahman, 40, had denied the assaults by beating of Yesmien Rahman and her 19-year-old daughter Nakiya Ulhassan at their home in Skipton on June 25.

But following a trial on November 19, magistrates told Rahman they did not believe his account and found him guilty of both assaults.

The court heard that Rahman, who had no previous convictions, slapped and hit the 19-year-old following an argument about her going out. He had also grabbed her mother around her face and pushed her out of the way.

During the trial, Rahman had admitted slapping the women, but claimed that he had acted in self-defence.

The 19-year-old had gone to hospital following the assault to be treated for injuries to her ear.

Sentencing last Wednesday, magistrates imposed a restraining order banning Rahman, now of Tweedle Hill Road, Manchester, from contacting or approaching Mrs Rahman or her daughter.

He was also given a 12-month community order with supervision and a five- month curfew, running from 6pm to 6am, every day of the week. He was also ordered to pay compensation of £100 to Mrs Rahman, £150 to her daughter and costs of £300.
