Schoolchildren have helped launch a £60,000 appeal to raise funds for equipment for a new endoscopy unit at Steeton’s Airedale Hospital.

Pupils of Steeton Primary School decorated dozens of Christmas pledge posters for hospital staff and supporters.

People were able to pass on festive messages to colleagues, donating money to the appeal instead of buying cards.

The equipment ‘wish list’ includes an irrigation pump, which reduces the risk of damaging the bowel and is more comfortable for patients, and a video processor to help diagnose patients more quickly and provide a clearer image for the clinician.

Also on the list are entonox hoses which allow procedures to be carried out without sedating patients, meaning they can drive home and return to work after just 35 minutes instead of staying overnight in hospital.

The Endoscopy Christmas Appeal is the first task for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust’s new fundraiser, Bronagh Daly, who has been appointed to lead campaigns which will result in major improvements to the facilities at Airedale Hospital.

Bronagh said: “We receive many donations from members of the public whose friends and family are treated in our hospital, but some departments are simply more popular than others.

“Our Endoscopy Christmas Appeal has been chosen as we are struggling to get the funds we need to buy vital equipment for this key area, which will really benefit patient care.”

The endoscopy unit is currently being rebuilt and expanded so that patients can be seen more quickly following referral from their GP.

The unit will provide extra capacity to deal with the increase in demand following public awareness initiatives and provide an extra procedure room.

It will offer same-sex facilities in all areas where this is necessary.

Anyone who wants to make a donation to the Endoscopy Christmas Appeal can text ENDO60 followed by £ and the amount they want to donate to 70070, or visit justgiving .com/AiredaleEndoscopy Christmas Appeal.
