A motorist escaped unhurt when their Mercedes crashed through a fence, slid down an embankment and ended up on its side in Hebden Beck.

The accident occurred between Hebden bridge and Hole Bottom and concerned passers-by raised the alarm on Christmas morning.

A police spokesman said: “Officers tracked down the owner of the car and established that the incident had taken place the previous evening and no-one was injured as a result of the vehicle leaving the road.

“The owner, who was on holiday in the area, arranged for the vehicle to be recovered.”

The picture was taken by Caroline and Ian Smith, of Bishop Monkton, Harrogate, who were enjoying a Christmas Day walk in the area.
