Teenage football star Jordan Armstrong is heading off to Spain.

Eighteen-year-old Jordan, from Millholme Rise, Bentham, has been offered the chance to further hone his skills in Federico Mayo in the Jerez region of southern Spain.

Jordan started playing football at the age of four and played for Preston North End for six years before getting a two-year scholarship with Shrewsbury Town.

And, now, he has won a 13-week placement with Federico Mayo through League Football Education and the Leonardo Da Vinci programme, which looks after former apprentices.

Just five places were available.

“This could be really good for me,” said Jordan, a former pupil of Settle High School. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

He will also do initial training with Cadiz, which plays in Segunda Division B – the third tier of Spanish football – and, at the end, could be offered a contract with a Spanish football club.

“I am hopeful and I will just have to make sure I work really hard,” said Jordan, who will start his placement on Monday, January 21. “I have already started learning some basic Spanish and have a CD in my car.”

His placement will end on Monday, April 22, but if he wins a contract, he will make a permanent move to Spain in the summer, leaving behind his parents John and Kath Armstrong, sister Hannah, 24, and brother, Will, 23.
