Home-made mouthwatering soups are on sale to Settle Primary School staff in an innovative fundraiser dreamt up by year six pupils.

Class teacher Laura Thompson challenged her students to “Grow a Pound” as the year group fundraises for their forthcoming trip to London.

John-Jo Cummins drew on his culinary interests and has used his pound to buy ingredients to start a mini-business selling his homemade soup throughout this half term. Every week he is offering a different flavour to staff including leek and potato, carrot and coriander and spicy lentil and tomato.

Classmate Leonie Dale is baking and selling home-made bread while Cameron Oglivie is polishing shoes. Liam Stubbs is making and selling slime, Sophie Lister plans to spruce up Settle’s pets with a dog grooming service and other initiatives include a craft stall, homemade sweets for sale, baking and bracelet making.

Headteacher Richard Wright said: “The children have all risen to the challenge of the Grow a Pound project. There are some really exciting, thoughtful and promising initiatives going on – we obviously have a large number of budding entrepreneurs on our hands, look out Lord Sugar!

“The money they raise will go towards funding the trip to London.”
