Appeal over Gargrave farm building thrown out

Plans to put up a farm building next to Church Street, Gargrave, have been thrown out on appeal.

The appellant, Mr NP Atkinson, who operates a small farming business, wanted to put up a 105 square metre building in a field running alongside Church Street.

The building, to be used to store materials and equipment for his farm contracting business, was refused permission by Craven District Council in April last year.

Government planning inspector Anthony Lyman has now upheld the council’s decision.

In his decision notice, Mr Lyman said the building would be an isolated and prominent development in the open countryside.

“It would cause significant harm to the character and appearance of the attractive landscape and there is insuf- ficient justification on economic and agricultural grounds to outweigh that harm.”
