Canalside homes in Skipton recommended for approval

A complex of one and two bedroomed homes for older people planned for a cleared site next to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Skipton is being recommended for approval.

The 33 McCarthy and Stone ‘later living’ apartments at Belle Vue Mills will include parking for 19 cars as well as a store for mobility scooters.

Access is proposed by Brook Street and Brewery Lane, and the complex, in a part four storey and part five storey block, will also feature garden terraces, a bike shelter and communal patio and terrace area.

It will also include a residents’ lounge, a guest suite and a house manager’s office.

The scheme, which is due to be decided on Monday by Craven District Council’s planning committee, has raised the concerns of some, including Skipton Town Council, because of the limited parking and access via residential Brook Street and the one way Brewery Lane, including the canal swing bridge.

But councillors will be told on Monday that the 19 parking spaces included in the development are considered sufficient because of the age of the expected residents, which will probably be over 70.
