HS2 railway link welcomed by Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line

Richard Morris, chairman of the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line, has given a broad welcome to plans for the second phase of HS2 which would connect Leeds and Manchester to the UK’s planned high speed rail network.

He said: “The proposed connection to Leeds focuses the mind on why the S&C was built – as the third main north-south line between England and Scotland.

“High speed connections to Leeds and Manchester strengthen the wisdom of retaining the S&C after it was under threat of closure in the 1980s.

“Had it actually closed there could now have been a cry to reopen it as a high speed line!”

“It is steadily resuming its intended role and trains run over it 24 hours a day.

“We shall be keen to play a part in the debate about the high speed network – especially where will it go after Leeds. Meanwhile we shall lose no opportunity to ensure that the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle main line prospers.”

It's a massive gamble, the business case is already weak and that's without the inevitable over run on costs and time delays.

This money or a lot less could be spent on replacing the country's old diesel trains, electrification and speeding up other routes which produces much stronger returns and far quicker than 2035.
