Manorlands fundraiser Andrew Wood with Danny Ridehalgh after his head shave
A teenager from Sutton had his head shaved to raise cash for the hospice which cared for his terminally-ill cousin.
Danny Ridehalgh, 17, who plays for Sutton FC, got the idea from football club chairman Craig Sanderson, who had previously joked about his long hair affecting his performance on the pitch.
Danny’s cousin, Kirsty Deakin, who lived in Glusburn, died of cervical cancer last summer.
She was married and had a four-year-old daughter. At least 300 people attended her funeral service at Keighley Shared Church and donated more than £1,300 to Manorlands.
Before she died, well-wishers raised money to send her and her family to Disneyland Paris, to give her young child some great memories.
Mr Sanderson said: “About three weeks ago, out of the blue, Danny agreed to have his hair cut if money could be raised for Sue Ryder Manorlands as the hospice had looked after his cousin.
“Danny collected sponsorship money from club members of Sutton Juniors and from both Sutton FC adult teams, as well as from family and friends. His total to date is £420, but more may come in over the next week.”
The head shave took place at the club’s training night at University Academy Keig-hley on Thursday. Vicky Sanderson carried out the shaving, watched by about 30 of Danny’s family and friends. Manorlands fundraiser Andr-ew Wood was also present.
Danny thanked the staff at Manorlands for looking after Kirsty, adding he hoped his donation would help them keep up their good work.
Mr Sanderson said: “Sutton Juniors would like to thank everyone that sponsored and helped - the staff at UAK, Vicky the hairdresser and Danny for finally getting his hair cut. We’re looking forward to a much better display on the pitch, now he can see where the ball is going!”
