Settle Rotary Club is running two new competitions for youngsters in the Craven area.

Called Young Writer and Young Artist, they encourage young people to express themselves on the theme of peace, using their writing or artistic skills.

Young Writer entrants must compose a letter on one side of A4 paper addressed to a person of their choice. They will be judged on imagination, the ability to engage interest and consistency in the power of argument.

And Young Artists must submit one picture using the artistic material of their choice.

It should be no larger than A1 size on paper or canvas and should be given a title. Entries will be judged on imagination and style, content and composition, and interpretation of the theme.

There are three age categories – seven to ten years, 11 to 13 and 14 to 17 – and the top three in each category will receive prizes of £50, £25 or £10.

Winners will also go forward to the Young Writer and Young Artist area competitions.

The Young Writer competition eventually ends in a national competition where winners in each category get the chance to read their entry on BBC Radio.

The closing date for entries is Wednesday, March 27.
