A Skipton charity shop has reached a special milestone.

The Martin House shop, on Sheep Street, has just raised its first half a million pounds – thanks to the purchase of a birthday card by volunteer Sandra Swindells.

“It is fantastic,” said shop manager Gill Newsome. “Since opening in 2008, the shop has gone from strength to strength. While other shops are closing down, we seem to be doing well.”

And she paid tribute to her 25 volunteers and loyal customers.

“We could not have reached this position without their help,” she added.

Martin House, which is based near Boston Spa, cares for children and young people with progressive life-limiting illnesses and provides support to their families.
