Emma Gibbons, a year four pupil at Christ Church C of E Primary School in Skipton, has won more than £500 for the school – by getting creative with rubbish.

She took part in an art competition – organised by JDP, a leading stockist of civil and drainage products for the building industry – which focused on the theme of waste and recycling.

The young artists were tasked with creating a seasonal landscape collage, from recyclable materials.

Judges decided eight-year-old Emma’s multi-seasonal collage fitted the brief best and made it overall winner of the northern heat of the competition.

It will now go on to compete in JDP’s national competition next month where Emma could win a further £1,000 towards an environmental project at Christ Church School.

And among the runners-up was a three-strong team of year five pupils from Skipton’s Greatwood Community Primary School.

The 10-year-old children – Emily Guy, Charlotte Christian and Nicole Thornton – won £100 for their school with their autumn-themed collage.

John Upton, regional manager of JDP, said “It’s been wonderful to see the variety and creativity of the children in their use of household products and recyclable materials to create a collage which depicts one of our seasons, winter, spring, summer or autumn, and Emma’s in particular stood out for its artistic flair.”
