Malsis Independent School in Glusburn has revealed plans to build houses on its land in order to “safeguard” its future.

It says sales of the 46 houses would be “crucial” to the next five years of Malsis which is suffering from the difficult economy and a highly competitive independent schools’ market.

The profit from the homes, which would be built on two separate sites within the school grounds, would also enable Malsis to enhance its sporting and recreational facilities for the whole community.

Headmaster Marcus Peel said it was vital not to underestimate the importance of the application which if successful would secure the school’s future and its place in the community.

“Its success will secure the future of Malsis for generations to come and provide fantastic community facilities. We have some wonderful sports facilities, but these require investment if they are to be used by the local community on a regular basis,” he said.

An outline planning application for the houses is due to be submitted shortly to Craven District Council. There has already had been some pre-applicaiton discussions.

The plans would include some affordable homes and would be built close to the main entrance on Colne Road and also at the back of the school grounds.

“We have thought long and hard about the future of Malsis and its role in the local community and we believe that releasing some of the school’s derelict and under-used land is the only option available to us,” said Mr Peel.

He said Malsis was still very much part of the community, as it has been since the 1920s.

“These are challenging times for independent schools across the country and Malsis is no exception.

“But, as we approach our centenary in 2020, we remain proud of our history and our achievements and are determined to plan for the future.”

Mr Peel said the school was very conscious of its important place in the community – both economically and socially – and that it employed more than 50 people from the area.

“The enhanced sporting and recreational facilities, which will be at the heart of our investment, will be of tremendous benefit to clubs and societies, from football clubs to girl guides, within a 15 mile radius of the school.

“The release of funds would also enable Malsis to offer more scholarships and bursaries to local children.”

A consultation event is due to take place at the school on Tuesday between 3.30pm and 7.30pm when people will have the chance to find out more about the proposals, look at indicative plans and generally learn more about the school.

Glusburn ward councillor Philip Barrett (Ind) said it was vital to work with Malsis in the current difficult economic times to help it secure its future.

“This independent school has been an excellent educational establishment for almost 100 years in South Craven and also provides local employment,” he said.

“With innovative planning and community involvement it could be a win win situation for both the school and local community along with the proposed enhancement of recreational and sports facilities.”

The school is holding a public event to show local people the plans.

If approved, the houses would be built by property investors and developers Marrtree and Leeds-based Chartford Homes.
