Final meeting for Cross Hills Naturalists Society
8:00am Monday 19th August 2013 in News
Cross Hills Naturalists Society will meet for the last time this week.
The group was formed in 1904 by 17 men from Cross Hills and the surrounding villages to hold regular meetings and enjoy excursions into the local countryside.
But current members have decided it is time to call it a day and will hold their final meeting in St Peter’s Church Schoolroom on Thursday at 2.30pm.
There will be an opportunity for members to reminisce over afternoon tea and watch presentations about the activities of the society over the years.
A spokesman said: “As the membership declined and recruitment of younger blood all but ceased, it became clear that the society could not sustain sufficient interest from the community.
“In 2000, membership stood at 110, but last year it was at an all-time low of 58. This dilemma was exacerbated as the natural world could now be beamed into people’s lives by television, satellite, internet and smart phones.”
