Best of British on offer at Littondale Fete
9:00am Friday 16th August 2013 in News
There was no denying the strength of Littondale residents when they held their annual fete on Saturday.
Attractions included a competition to find the strongest men and women, and top honours went to Roger Cowan, Richard Paul, Rachel Lund and Vicky Lund.
And even the vicar, the Rev Peter Yorkstone, put his strength to the test ahead of the main event.
Mr Yorkstone also had the difficult task of judging the parish displays and fancy dress competition, which had a Best of British theme.
First prize in the display contest went to Arncliffe, while the overall fancy dress winner was Roxy Middleton, with a Keep Britain Farming Dalesbred Sheep outfit.
The tug of war provided a great spectacle and was won by The Dalesmen, which was made up of representatives from each Littondale parish.
Fun was had by all who entered the children’s races and there were 20 enthusiastic entries in the fun dog show.
It proved a record-breaking day in the fell races, which attracted more than 200 runners.
Appletreewick’s Ted Mason, who finished third last year despite having six stitches in a knee injury, took a record seventh senior title in a time of 10.47.
Second home was last year’s runner-up Ian Holmes in 11.20 and third was Paul Dugdale in 11.35.
Evan Mills won the under nine race in a record-equalling 5.47, but the run of the day came from nine-year-old Fraser Sproul, from Sedbergh, who won the U12s race by slashing 16 seconds off the record and finishing in 6.51. The full race results are on the sports pages.
Fete organiser Kate Beard said: “Huge thanks go to all who helped make Littondale Fete a grand day out, to all those who came along and especially to everyone who put in so much time and effort behind the scenes.”
To top off the day, there was a dance, with entertainment provided by Abi and Marc, of ISSIMO, and Holy Moly and the Crackers.
