Women’s institute: Mary Mitchell chaired the August meeting of Salterforth WI in place of the president, Janette Pate, who was on holiday. She welcomed members and visitors and then introduced Nicki and Barbara, from Brierfield Women’s Refuge. Barbara was representing the Pendle Domestic Violence Initiative and gave an insight into the work it does, helping women and men suffering both mental and physical abuse. Nicki is involved with the Lookout scheme, which helps young people living in an environment that causes them fear or distress. Members gave generous donations of much-needed light bulbs, towels, toiletries and soft toys. Marie Potter gave the vote of thanks and the result of the competition for a soft toy was: 1 Pam Fieldhouse, 2 Megan Sunley, 3 Netta Lambert. The business meeting followed in which plans were discussed for the group carol service, which will be hosted this year by Salterforth, and suggestions for a venue for the Christmas meal were also considered. Transport and directions to Rimington WI were finalised with the members who wish to attend their meeting on Tuesday, September 3. The next meeting of Salterforth WI will be in the village hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 12, and the talk will be titled From Policeman to Barrister. The competition will be for a beer mat.
