Church plans major refurbishment

PLANS to give Kildwick's historic church an £800,000 overhaul are currently on display.

The blueprints include a larger area for groups and social events, more comfortable seating, a meeting room, crche, heritage area, kitchen and toilets, a secure vestry space and parish office, an upgraded heating system and modern lighting and sound system.

The plans, being spearheaded by the Parochial Church Council, were unveiled on Sunday after consultation with residents began in 2004. It is estimated £800,000 is required for the renovation, and a fundraising drive will start in the new year.

The vicar of Kildwick, Rev Robin Figg, said: "St Andrew's Church has played a major role in the life of the community here for centuries. In common with many churches it is very well used, but its facilities are badly in need of updating.

" It is an exciting time and though we have a lot of hard work to do to raise the funds we need, if the plans go ahead everyone is committed to making this vision happen for the future of our community.”

"St Andrew's has a wonderful history and we plan to combine the old with the new, to bring everything in line with the needs and demands of the 21st century while respecting the building and its place at the heart of the community."

Rev Figg added: "We intend to provide improved facilities for all sections of the community - young, old and in between. It is an exciting time and though we have a lot of hard work to do to raise the funds we need, if the plans go ahead everyone is committed to making this vision happen for the future of our community."
