Although it was thought it could be the last, Saturday’s 70th Earby Horticultural Show experienced a first.

“This was one of our best shows for a number of years,” said David Hartley, president of the Earby and District Gardeners Society, who organise the show. “There were more entries and more people were showing better quality entries.

“We were thinking that this could be our last show, but there was a good response to an appeal for committee members and volunteers so we should be fine to have one next year.”

Mr Hartley also said that one of most interesting items at this year’s show was a lady, Carolyn Eastwood, who won the jar of marmalade entry by growing oranges in her conservatory.

“We’ve never had that before,” said Mr Hartley, who also mentioned that Kath Foster won Best in Show for her three gladioli entry.
