A Skipton couple, who met at a local dance, have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Douglas and Barbara Carr, who live at Overdale Court, were married at the town’s Holy Trinity Church on August 22, 1953.
Barbara left school at 14 to work at Thomas Lumb’s paper mill, Skipton – now the Victoria Mills flats – and later at Aspinall Paints in Carleton, which she left to have a family.
The couple have two children, Paul and Denise, and two grandchildren, Ruby and Bradley.
At 14, Douglas started work at the Pethybridges, the wholesale grocers on Pinder Bridge. National Service with the RAF followed at 18 and then Douglas spent 30 years with British Rail, working in the signal and telegraph department.
After a short spell at Rolls-Royce, the couple moved to West London where Douglas became caretaker of two small schools. They returned to Skipton after he retired.
The couple now enjoy travelling, both at home and abroad, and spending time with family and friends in Norfolk and Skipton.
“We have had a very happy marriage and have a close and loving relationship with our family,” they said.
