Home Group plans to build affordable houses at Grassington

People in need of affordable homes in a Yorkshire Dales village are set to benefit from a new development.
Home Group has announced that it intends to build 12 new homes in Grassington to help tackle the shortage of affordable rural housing for local people.
The exact location of the site has not been revealed as talks are taking place with landowners.
The announcement comes after it secured over £8.5m in Government funding to build more than 350 homes throughout Yorkshire and the north east.
It is the largest of any single housing provider in the region and comes as part of a £12.7m grant from the Homes and Communities Agency to build 642 properties throughout the UK.
The homes will be built as part of Home Group’s 2015-17 development programme.
Teresa Snaith, Home Group head of development, said: “Nine of these homes will be available for rent to local people in need of affordable housing and three of them will be available on a shared ownership basis, allowing people struggling to get onto the property ladder a chance to own their home.
“Building in a national park area involves extra levels of planning and can be time-consuming but we’re committed to providing homes for people where they need them.
“Demand for housing in the Yorkshire Dales is very high and many local people who have lived here most of their lives are forced to move out of the area due to the high cost of housing.
“These new developments won’t just increase the number of homes available but also help to contribute towards the wider community.”
The homes come in addition to the 764 properties Home Group will build in Yorkshire and the north east for the HCA by March 2015.
Figures from the National Housing Federation show that the average cost of a home in Craven District is £202,688, which means an income of £43,433 is needed to buy an average house on a 75 per cent mortgage. Average salaries in the area are £17,482.
Coun Richard Foster, Craven District Council’s member for affordable housing said: “This is fantastic news. Affordable housing is one of our corporate priorities and we have worked closely with Home Group and the National Park to make this happen.
“I am delighted that local people will soon benefit from the new homes planned in Grassington.”
