Veterans hold service for VJ Day
8:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
Former servicemen and women marked the 68th anniversary of VJ Day with a short service at Skipton War Memorial.
They remembered the day when the Japanese surrendered after fighting the Allies during the Second World War .
And leading the tribute was Jim Surr, who saw active service in the Far East during the conflict.
Mr Surr, of Embsay, served with the Royal Artillery and was one of only six in his regiment to return from the war. The others were killed in Borneo after the Japanese capitulated. He survived because he was in hospital with dysentery at the time.
He was joined by members of Skipton Royal British Legion and buglers from the legion band.
