Beating the Bounds walk at Barnoldswick
7:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
Barnoldswick is hosting its annual Beating the Bounds walk on Sunday.
Scores of walkers from across the country are expected for the traditional event, which marks the town’s boundaries by beating willow wands against boundary stones.
The ancient tradition comes from a time before maps were available and it was carried out to ensure that the townfolk’s ancestors showed their children where the town boundaries were.
The nine-mile circular walk sets off from Letcliffe Park at 10.30am. Barnoldswick Town Council will provide a lunch for participants together with a rendering of the town’s Beating the Bounds song.
