The skies were grey but Burnsall Feast Sports delivered a vibrant afternoon of sporting drama and family entertainment.

The picture perfect setting on the village green contained the full Feast menu, replete with pillow fight, coconut shy and Punch and Judy amongst the many side shows, all set off most quintessentially to the tones of the local brass band.

Guest race starter Alan Hinkes OBE, the first and only Briton to climb all 14 of the world’s highest mountains over 8000m, was enthralled by his first visit to Burnsall Feast Sports, describing the view from the summit of the fell as “superlative”, and spent time chatting to people about his adventures.

Two other special sporting guests circulating amongst the crowd were Dave Hodgson, who won the race in 1958 and 1960, and who is invited back each year to commentate on the Classic Fell Race, and John Wild, three times former winner and the current Burnsall Feast record holder which he set in 1983.

“My wife and I are having a brilliant day. I have a real fondness for this Sports, it is wonderfully traditional. It’s so nice to come back and see lots of old faces again” enthused John. Fun was had by all the children taking part in the children’s flat and novelty races.

Alan Buckley, from Leeds, an England international cross country runner won the 10 mile Road Race in 52.09, narrowly missing out on breaking the record of 49.19, which has stood since 1977 for this challenging course.

The highlight of the day, as ever, was one of England’s premier short course fell races, the Burnsall Classic Fell Race which attracted record entries, and saw 160 men and women run the course.

Simon Bailey, a Staffordshire sheep farmer, and the reigning England fell running champion raced home to victory in 14.10 which was a great time considering that he’s never run the course before. Sam Tosh, from Rossendale, a former junior international star came second, and local celebrity and 2011 winner, Ted Mason came third.

Sports chairman Alan Stockdale commented “It’s been a tremendous day with a really good number of entries in all events. “Huge thanks must go out to everyone who’s helped to make yet another great year for the Sports, and of course heartfelt thanks to everyone who has come along and supported us.”
