Rescuers work overnight to free cavers
7:00am Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
More than 40 rescuers took part in an overnight operatiion to free two cavers trapped underground near Kettlewell.
The men, aged 52 and 49, got stuck in Dowber Gill Passage on a trip from Providence Pot to Dow Cave on Saturday night.
They then called for additional assistance from the Cave Rescue Organisation, which is based at Clapham.
The teams worked for nine hours, eventually freeing the two men by 6.15am. A third caver – a 61-year-old man – who was with them was also escorted out.
All three were uninjured and able to make their own way down to the road at Park Rash.
“Dowber Gill has been the scene of many, many rescues down the years,” said Upper Wharfedale chairman Harry Long.
“It is an awkward route to follow and it is likely these cavers veered from it and slid down the passage. They were not hurt – they were simply wedged and couldn’t get out.”
