Settle swimming pool facing financial struggle
9:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in News
Settle Pool faces a financial struggle and needs the public’s continued support.
The pool – which was built more than 30 years ago – has become increasingly popular, providing a vital community facility for the town and surrounding villages.
But with running costs on the rise and grants more difficult to secure, funding is expected to become a critical factor in the pool’s future.
Pool committee chairman Trevor Graveson said: “Settle Area Swimming Pool is a registered charity and we rely heavily on contributions from all sections of the local community.
“We receive significant assistance from Craven District Council with an annual grant. In addition the Friends of the Pool (who organise waste paper collections) provide important support and several local organisations and businesses have helped.
“But we face a continuing battle to raise funds to ensure its future.”
The pool was built as a result of the generosity of the local population, with the aim of providing a facility where children could learn to swim.
That target has been met, with about 400 children acquiring the potentially lifesaving skill last year.
