Cowling author Peter Wilkin has published his first children’s book.
And he recounted his daring tale of dragons and crystals to pupils at the village primary school.
Briannca and the Crystal Dragons – which has received five star reviews on Amazon – focuses on the life of schoolgirl Briannca Chardine, who one day discovers a dragon in her bedroom and a gang of dragons guzzling the contents of the school kitchen store cupboard.
Guided by a mysterious and eccentric shop owner, Briannca takes on the challenge of rescuing seven dragons from their crystal caves. On the way she encounters the deadly fogbrain plants and the mind-boggling Quantum Tunnel.
Peter, a psychotherapist, has written many academic papers and poetry in the past, but this is his first venture into children’s literature.
He said: “I have really enjoyed writing this book for children as there are no rules, you can be so creative and play! The Cowling children were really interested and asked some fantastic questions about story writing. They were rapt.
“Reading is so important and is always a learning process. Reading is a good way of relaxing and exploring at the same time.”
Enthused by Peter’s success, Cowling School has set junior pupils the challenge of writing their own stories which the author will judge.
Headteacher Sue Marshall said: “Children enjoy stories so much and it was wonderful that Peter was right here in the village and able to spend time reading in all the classes.”
