Settle Amateur Operatic Society member tells story of Camamity Jane
9:00am Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
Settle Amateur Operatic Society member Helen Jarvis has been visiting primary schools to tell the story of Calamity Jane – and the importance of being careful with the truth.
“The children are finding the story of Calamity Jane a very interesting one,” said Mrs Jarvis.
“The real Calamity was born in America in 1852. She worked as a scout for the army and fought alongside the soldiers.
“She became very famous as a frontierswoman and her tall tales were made into Penny Dreadful comics and Dime Novels. She was employed by Buffalo Bill as a storyteller in his circus and people flocked to hear her exciting adventures.”
Mrs Jarvis’s visits have helped to promote the operatic society’s production of Calamity Jane, which will be staged at the Victoria Hall in Settle from Monday, October 28, to Saturday, November 2.
Tickets are available from the box office on 01729 825718.
