Barnoldswick man in court over headbutting incident
7:00am Thursday 17th October 2013 in News
A West Craven man headbutted someone at Skipton’s Strata Nightclub, the town’s magistrates heard.
Former Essex man Daniel Lee Rowlands, 21, who recently moved to Barnoldswick to live with his father, headbutted another man outside the Keighley Road club on May 19, the court was told.
Rowlands, who had denied using threatening words or behaviour, but was found guilty at a trial last month, had been drinking at Wetherspoons in nearby Newmarket Street.
Because of an incident in the pub, staff had flagged down a passing police car and alerted officers to a man who appeared to be “looking for a fight”.
Officers arrived at the Strata club in time to see Rowlands headbutt another male in the face. His victim, however, declined to make a complaint, the court heard.
Rowlands claimed he had acted in self defence, but Strata staff said it was Rowlands who had been the aggressor, the court heard.
In mitigation, Tahir Hanif said Rowlands had been out celebrating a friend’s birthday when there had been an incident in Wetherspoons.
Rowlands, of Beech Grove, who had served in the army and had qualifications in painting, decorating and roofing, was in full time employment, the court was told.
He was given a 12-month community order with supervision and ordered to carry out 100 hours’ unpaid work. He will also have to pay costs of £350 and a victims surcharge of £60.
