More than 160 children took part in the fourth junior triathlon, organised by Craven Energy Triathlon and Multisport Club and held at Skipton’s Craven Pool and Aireville Park.
All available places had been filled and the majority of entrants were local children. However, there was also great interest in the race from far afield with entrants from across the North of England.
Forty eight children went off in the first event, the Tri Start race, for eight and nine year olds and the distances were kept purposefully short to encourage budding Brownlees to have a go. There were some impressive performances from Craven Energy (CE) children with Hannah Jackson pipping Grace Dawson to the post in a home town 1-2. Harrison Oddie from Ilkley led the boys’ field with Joe Hayes the first CE boy home in sixth place.
The Tri Star 1 race for nine to 11-year-olds saw 73 children aiming to complete a 100 metre swim, 1,500 metre bike and 1,000 metre run.
Joe Sherman, of Leeds, took first place ahead of two athletes from NYP TriStars. Similarly in the girls’ race Charlotte Parris, of Harrogate, led home two NYP TriStars. There were great performances from 19 Craven Energisers with Louis Hudson and Maya Whitton both finishing fourth in their respective races.
Distances lengthened for the 41 participants in the The Tri Star 2 Race for 12 to 14-year-olds. Toby Osman and Ben Mewes of NYP TriStars went head to head in the boys’ race with Toby, second last year, leading out Ben by three seconds. In the female race, last year’s winner Zoe Kitching of LBT emerged victorious, setting a course record, and her sister, Sasha, was third. Jacob Jackson and Leonie Harry were the lead Craven Energy athletes in their respective races.
For the first time, the event had a sponsor, local solicitors AWB Charlesworth.
Craven Energy chairman Declan Hayes said: “The club is delighted that the feedback from all the competitors and their families expressed how enjoyable the event was, with friendly and helpful marshals assisting triathletes throughout, in what for most was their first experience of the sport.
“Craven Energy’s primary focus in putting on this event is to encourage local children to enjoy the sport of triathlon, which is firmly linked to a healthy lifestyle and a good grounding in physical fitness. Forty of the children who took part in the event have enjoyed training opportunities laid on by the club.”
