Cowling Recreation Ground upgrade delayed

Complications have delayed plans to refurbish Cowling Recreation Ground.
Parish clerk Andrew Mallinson said the parish council wanted to purchase new play equipment for the Main Street recreation ground, which would cost in the region of £150,000 to £300,000.
Mr Mallinson said a large portion of the funding was likely to come from grants provided by organisations such as Sport England or the Big Lottery Fund.
“But there are more and more groups vying for those pots of money these days,” warned Mr Mallinson Another complication is that to qualify for any funding the recreation ground would need to set up a new management committee.
The old one was dissolved earlier this year and Cowling Parish Council is now working to try to establish a new one.
Coun Joan Tindale said that the old ten-person committee had been made up five lifelong members, three of whom were in the 80s.
She and Mr Mallinson, who is chairman of the interim management committee, said that most of the lifelong members were not interested in serving on the committee.
“We wouldn’t want to end up with committee members in nursing homes,” said Coun Tindale. “That wouldn’t be good for anyone.”
The council held a public meeting in early September to discuss the way forward for recreation ground - which was opened in 1923 - but a low turnout and lack of volunteers has made it impossible to form a new committee.
Mr Mallinson is now appealing for people to come forward to serve on a committee.
He said: “Ideally, we’d like ten people with the right skills who can assist in developing an interactive play area for the community.”
The recreation ground issue will then be reviewed at a Cowling Parish Council meeting in February.
