The annual Gargrave Autumn Art and Crafts Exhibition has raised more than £1,000 for local charities.

Featuring a variety of artwork and handicrafts including paintings, drawings, jewellery, accessories and knitted products, the four-day event was well attended, attracting more than 500 visitors during the course of the exhibition.

It raised more than £1,000, which will be split between Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, the NSPCC and Gargrave Village Hall.

Alan Poxon, chairman of the arts and crafts committee, said: “I’m relieved that the event has proven successful once again, when so many exhibitions this year have failed to meet expectations in these financially difficult times.

“We are so very well-supported by our artists and craftspeople, and are fortunate and grateful to have so many talented people among us, and along with our many voluntary helpers, it makes putting on the show relatively easy. Once the public see the content of the show, it is inevitable that they come back and buy something lovely.”

The Clapham-based trust – one of the beneficiaries of the event – also raised £157 through sales of homemade greetings cards and knitted socks and tea cosies, donated by supporters of the charity, as well as its own range of gifts and cards at the exhibition.

Sarah Brewer, the trust’s fundraising and marketing officer, said: “We are very grateful to the Gargrave Arts and Crafts Committee for inviting the trust to take part in this lovely event once again. We’d also like to thank everyone who attended the exhibition and made a donation or purchased one of our products to support the work of the trust.”
