A Sutton school has won nearly £50,000 of lottery cash to set up a brass band.

Christa Baldwin, a year four teacher at Sutton Community Primary School, said the support of all age groups in and around the village had been vital in helping secure the £49,990 grant for the band.

She said: “What’s great about the project is the whole pulling together of the community.”

The school is spearheading the band project after pupils started taking up brass instrument lessons.

Last week, the Sutton’s Got Brass scheme won the public vote as part of the annual People’s Millions campaign on the ITV Yorkshire North news programme.

Mrs Baldwin stressed that the band was intended for people of all ages and abilities from across Sutton and the surrounding area.

She said: “We want all the generations – children, mums and dads, grandparents, more than one person from each family.

“Some of the children in the school have been playing for two months and they want to join the band.

“There are lots of people around who have never picked up an instrument. And there are people in the village who have played for years.”

Mrs Baldwin gave a massive thank you to all the people who had helped secure the grant, from those who publicised the campaign to everyone who voted.

She said there had been “so many positives” for the youngsters from their experience running a campaign.

She said: “They have learned speaking and listening skills and done a great job putting over the message.

“Some of them have presented the campaign to people they would never have thought of talking to.”

She said a steering group of adults would now be formed to discuss the details of how the band would operate.

Dawn Austwick, chief executive of the Big Lottery Fund, said: “This is a brilliant result for the people of Sutton-in-Craven and shows what groups can achieve when they have the support of their community behind them.”
