Work has been promised to solve a problem affecting street lighting in Silsden.

Dozens of street lamps have been knocked out due to the malfunction of a fuse at one of the town’s electricity substations.

The problem was highlighted by district councillor Andrew Mallinson, who has reported more than 30 street lamps not working.

He was responding to complaints from residents at a recent neighbourhood forum about problems in the Bolton Road, Briggate and Bridge Street area.

Coun Mallinson, who represents Craven Ward on Bradford Council, said both pedestrians and car users were being put at risk. He said: “The area around the Co-op has been turned into a black wilderness and a hazard for those out at night.”

Coun Mallinson told the neighbourhood forum residents reported that some streets were in total darkness and action was needed before accidents occurred.

He said: “I have reported these faulty lights to Bradford Council after doing a walk around the ward on an evening. Many of them have been repaired, but not all of them and more and more are failing at an unacceptable rate.”

He encouraged residents to report faulty lights through the Bradford Council hotline number of 01274 431000.

A Bradford Council spokesman said Northern Powergrid had discovered a fuse in the substation had caused outages on street lighting and was attempting to solve the problem.
