A 21-year-old was over the drink-drive limit when he parked up in front of a police officer, Skipton magistrates heard.

James Smith drove into Sandylands Sports Centre car park from Engine Shed Lane at 3.30am on November 17, got out and walked off.

The officer saw Smith walking unsteadily and spoke to him. The defendant smelled of alcohol, was breathalysed and was taken to the police station where he was found to have 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Smith, who admitted drink-driving, had been out with a work colleague for the evening and had intended to stay overnight before playing football the next morning, the court was told in mitigation.

He had no previous convictions and had co-operated fully with the police.

Magistrates banned Smith, of Lachman Road, Trawden, from driving for 17 months and fined him £80 with costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £20. If he completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course by November 6, he will receive a 17-week reduction.
