Craven District Council chairman Coun Donny Whaites and his wife, Alice, were guests at the December meeting of the Skipton and Wharfedale Decorative and Fine Arts Society.
Also present was Graham Hamilton, headmaster of Ermysted’s Grammar School, Skipton.
The evening began with mulled wine and mince pies and continued with Nicholas Merchant’s illustrated talk on the Private Palaces on the Cote D’Azur.
He described how the South of France was discovered by the rich in the 19th century, who built palatial residences in a variety of grand styles, outdoing each other in manner and opulence.
