A Carleton man was reported to the police for suspected drink driving after a minor collision, Skipton magistrates heard.

Roofer Kevin Poulter, 38, stopped and suggested a garage for paint repairs to the other driver following the collision on Cawder Bridge, Skipton, at 7.30pm on November 18, the court heard on Friday. But the other driver noticed Poulter, of Chapel Street, smelled of alcohol and called the police.

Poulter was traced to an address in Bradley where he answered the door to police and admitted straight away he had been driving, the court was told. He provided a positive breath test and was taken to the police station where he was found to have 80 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Poulter admitted drink-driving but was adamant he had only drunk two pints of lager before driving and assumed the reading was down to the small amount he had eaten.

He was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £320 with costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £32. If he completes a drink-drivers rehabilitation course his ban will be reduced by 20 weeks.
