A 19-year-old with a lifelong dream of joining the army has been handed a curfew by magistrates after admitting threatening behaviour and possessing cocaine.

Police called to a disturbance outside the Strata nightclub in Skipton had to Taser John Mark Burnside twice to calm him down, Skipton magistrates were told.

Burnside, who had drunk ten pints of beer as well as wine, had been verbally abusing people waiting to get into the club shortly after midnight on September 28, the court heard. He had been going up to people and shouting in their faces.

When three police officers tried to pull him away, he threatened them and their families.

After being tasered in the chest and leg, he was arrested and taken to the police station where 528 milligrams of cocaine was found in a bag hidden in his boxer shorts.

The court heard he had been subject to a 12-month community order at the time for identical offences of resisting arrest and the possession of cocaine.

Burnside, who represented himself in court, admitted threatening behaviour, resisting arrest and the possession of a class A drug, although he claimed he had no idea what the drug was.

He said he had been very drunk at the time and had been suffering following the suicide two years ago of his brother.

He told the court he was sorry and wanted to turn his life around and go into the Infantry.

Magistrates sentenced Burnside, of Ribbledale Court, Long Preston, to a 12- month community order with supervision and a six- week weekend curfew to run from 8pm to 6am.

He was also given 14 days to pay costs of £85 and a £60 victim surcharge.
