A driver ordered to stop by a police officer in a high visibility jacket thought the officer was working on the road, Skipton magistrates were told.

Shiraz Ali Akram, 28, driving an Audi A4, had overtaken a coach on Keighley Road, Skipton, and had accelerated towards the officer who was conducting speed checks at about 3pm on July 8, the court heard.

The officer put his hand up to stop the Audi, but it swerved to avoid him and continued along the road.

Akram, who admitted by letter to court failing to stop when required to by a police officer, was followed and stopped by the officer a short distance away, the court heard.

He told the officer he had seen someone in a high- visibility jacket, but had not realised he was a policeman.

Akram, of Granville Road, Bradford, was fined £140 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victims’ surcharge.
