While most students will still be enjoying their Christmas holiday, a year eight South Craven School pupil will be learning the lines for his appearance in a film.

Sam Burles, who is a keen drama student, has landed a role in the new Victoria Wood musical film, Tubby and Enid. Shooting for the BBC2 drama begins in Manchester on January 6.

As well as taking part in school productions, Sam, pictured, also attends Stage Coach, a theatre school in Keighley and his drama teacher Matt Zina suggested he go for a part in the 90-minute film and arranged an audition with the casting director.

A South Craven School spokesman said: “Having obviously impressed, Sam was recalled to meet Victoria Wood herself and heard last week that he had been offered the part of Hewitt.

“The film, a rewrite of the stage play ‘That day we sang’ is set in 1969 with scenes looking back to 1929 and it is in this timeframe that Sam will be playing Hewitt.

“He has eight lines in the film and is hugely excited at this introduction to the world of drama. He is hoping that this might be the beginning of a future career for him.”
