Latest statistics compiled by North Yorkshire County Council reveal that child road casualties rose from 172 in 2011 to 189 at the end of 2012, an increase of ten per cent.
The number of children killed or seriously injured went up over the same period from 21 to 28.
A spokesman said: “These are mainly pedestrians, most of whom step out to cross the road from the driver’s nearside.”
