An apprentice at Rolls-Royce in Barnoldswick is flying high after winning a prestigious national award.

Higher technical apprentice Sara Underwood, 21, has scooped the Mary George Memorial Award in the Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards.

The national award is given annually to an “outstanding female engineering apprentice”.

Judges said Sara made a contribution within her workplace beyond the realms of her normal duties. She also demonstrated a dynamic approach to solving engineering problems.

Sara, who is from Skipton, is due to start a BEng in Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University and hopes to continue her career at Rolls-Royce after her degree.

She started her apprenticeship in September 2011 and is involved in helping to promote apprenticeships to young people across East Lancashire.

She said: “There are so many opportunities for women in engineering, I am keen to inspire others to take on the challenge and work in this exciting sector.”
