Skipton Building Society Camerata has come up with the perfect antidote to Blue Monday.

In an event believed to be the first of its kind at Leeds Railway Station, the professional musicians will help tired commuters by playing a free classical concert on the concourse.

The term, Blue Monday, arose after Dr Cliff Arnall devised an equation to determine the date of the most depressing day of the year, based on financial woes, bad weather, a lack of motivation, failure to keep to new year’s resolutions and the desire to take action in one’s life. He determined the third Monday in January – which, this year, falls on January 20 – was to take the title.

The Camerata has decided to fight against this negative label and, from 5pm to 6pm, will play uplifting classical pieces to boost the spirits of passing commuters. They will be joined by Donna Lennard, a Covent Garden soloist.

Ben Crick, artistic director and BBC Music Fellow, said: “We are really looking forward to this event. It’s not a usual venue for a professional orchestra so we’re excited about the reaction we will get from commuters.

“If you are feeling a bit stressed after work, please come down to enjoy the music. We will only be playing happy compositions. The entire gig will be one hour long and will strive to give you an uplifting performance.”

A second free concert will be given at Skipton Girls’ High School at 8pm, with tickets allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Ben said: “We really wanted to help people feel brighter on Blue Monday.”

The concerts launch a packed 2014 for the orchestra which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It was set up with the aim of bringing quality, accessible classical music to new audiences in Yorkshire and beyond.

Thanks to funding from Skipton Building Society, it is able to play in innovative locations such as pubs, cattle markets, coffee shops and shopping centres.

But its classical musicians, drawn from all around the country, are equally at home playing in the Royal Festival Hall, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Harewood House and The Royal Northern College of Music.
