Horse riders, walkers and cyclists are being urged to take part in a sponsored event to raise money for North Craven primary schools.

Following the success of last year’s first-ever event, the three primary schools, in Austwick, Clapham and Horton-in-Ribblesdale, are staging it again.

So far, the event, due to take place during the early May Bank Holiday weekend, is attracting people from far and wide.

The three schools’ executive headteacher, Gill Woods, said: “After a hugely successful event last year, we’re delighted that this year it’s attracting wider interest from outside the area and from all sorts of clubs and organisations.”

This year the course will be just over 11 miles long and will start and finish in Clapham. The route will wind its way through the Three Peaks and include panoramic views.

“The circular route will make it much easier logistically for everyone taking part, and holding it on the May Bank holiday weekend also makes it more attractive,” said Mrs Woods.

It is hoped that cyclists looking forward to the Tour de France in July will want to experience some of the same iconic scenery, while horse riders will be able to try out some of the Pennine Bridleway to reach Clapham.

Much of the route is off- road, giving those taking part a safe opportunity to enjoy the scenery on a clearly marked route.

Mrs Woods hopes that the event will help fund projects at the three schools, all faced with significant reductions in their revenues.

All of the schools are classed outstanding by Ofsted and together have a total of 128 pupils.

“I hope the fundraising efforts focussed in the sponsored walk-run-cycle-ride event will enable the staff to continue to deliver these exceptional standards,” added Mrs Woods.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 3 and will cost £8 in advance, or £10 on the day. Those taking part will be encouraged to get sponsorship. Times and maps will be issued on the day from the starting point at Clapham Car Park, and there will also be refreshments.
