One of the leading caving clubs in the country will celebrate its 60th anniversary this spring and is looking for former members to join in.

The White Rose Pothole Club will hold a diamond anniversary dinner at the Herriots Hotel, Skipton, on Saturday, March 29.

The club has also planned a “summer bash” at Kettlewell Village Hall for Saturday, June 21, with music from a rockabilly band.

Originally the club was formed as the Southern and Redfern Caving Club in 1953 by a small group of cavers who worked for Southern and Redfern Refrigeration Engineers in Bradford.

“By May 1954 membership was being drawn from further afield and so the White Rose Pothole Club was born,” said Claire Cole, who is helping to co-ordinate the event.

The club has been at the leading edge of cave exploration both in the Yorkshire Dales and around the world.

In the last decade, members have been making their mark in northern Spain, where more trips are planned this year.

The club has also been involved in cave-rescue work, particularly with the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association, of which many are still members.
