Horton-in-Ribblesdale Parish Council has backed plans to create a railhead at Arcow Quarry in nearby Helwith Bridge.

It recommended that a series of conditions should be imposed on any approval granted by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. The matter was discussed at a special parish council meeting, attended by residents and representatives of quarry operators Lafarge/Tarmac.

A number of concerns were raised, including the number of wagon movements, the generation of dust and the impact of the proposals on the restoration plan for Arcow quarry. The council said that, on balance, the impact of the proposals was not so extreme as to merit outright objection, but there was a need for a number of enforceable conditions.

These included effective dust suppression at both Arcow and Dry Rigg quarries, a speed restriction on the minor road leading to Arcow, the possibility of creating additional passing places and adequate provision to protect walkers using the road.

Members also said an extensive wildlife area must be created to compensate for the habitat lost to the development.
